Let me elaborate:
I’ve seen an audiologist twice, same results each time.
- I have moderate sensorineural hearing loss
- it is asymmetrical (my left ear is worse than the right)
- I have trouble hearing low to mid frequencies in my left ear, only have trouble with mid frequencies in my right ear.
- I get a ringing (tinnitus) in my ears, not constantly though, and it happens more in my worse ear.
- My brother has hearing loss (he was tested) and my sister seems to have hearing loss too (she wasnt tested, but she has trouble hearing for sure)
- I have trouble understanding people because of it
- HOWEVER, my blood work came back negative for genetic hearing loss. I find that strange since we all have hearing loss.
- Ive never had an illness (like meningitis) to cause the hearing loss
- it is acquired (noticed it two or three years ago) not congenital (i wasnt born with bad hearing)
- I’m only 18, so it’s not because of age!
- It’s not because of loud noises either, because I can hear high frequencies just fine.
SO. I’m worried it might be caused by some sort of tumor, like an acoustic neuroma.
I also saw an ENT (ear nose throat doctor) and she had me get a CT scan WITHOUT contrast to see if something was wrong with my ear bones or see if there was “something on the auditory/acoustic nerve”. The results came back normal.
BUT I took the liberty to look up acoustic neuromas- they are usually small and can be easily missed by CT scans (especially since I didn’t have contrast) and all the sources I looked up stated an MRI was the best test to receive for such tumors. I don’t understand why she didn’t have me get one. I have a follow up with her six months from now, but I was wondering should I wait until then to ask for an MRI or should I try to get one as soon as possible?
