Hey everyone. Last Wednesday I took a couple shots of .380 without ear protection. In the 6 months prior, I took around 9 shots of .40 S&W unprotected also. I felt a stuffiness in my ear Wednesday after getting home, and then I believe Friday I noticed symptoms of Tinnitus, so say it’s been about a week. I still am noticing it, but it’s either going away, or I’m getting used to it.
Music is my life, all around. I’m really into Rap/Hip Hop because of the beats. I planned on making a career out of being a DJ, and maybe moving up in the future. I honestly think that if this is permanent I’m going to commit suicide. The reason is, hearing loss is cumulative. So, sounds that wouldn’t have hurt my hearing in the past, now will because I think these shots accelerated my hearing loss. I’m not sure what to do.
I have an appointment with an Audiologist/ENT next week, but I can pretty much tell you that by reading online I’ve found out all I need to know about Tinnitus. I DON’T want this, and although I can, I’m NOT going to live with this. Please can somebody, anybody please try to atleast calm me down? I do not want this forever. I want to go back to normal. I also want to hurt myself for being so stupid and shooting without protection. I’ve always used protection in the past, but I didn’t think a few shots would be this bad to my ears. I’m going CRAZY. Please help guys. Thank you.
Hey everyone. I’m a 20 year old male. About 6 months ago, I took around 12 shots from a handgun without hearing protection over the course of 2 months (one or 2 shots every 2 weeks). It was a .40S&W for what it’s worth. I did have my hood up though. After the last time, I noticed a ‘fullness’ in my ears & I knew what I was doing was very stupid. I’ve always shot with ear protection, but being that it was only one or two shots every so often I didn’t think it would be that bad. My ears never rang after shooting any of the times, surprisingly. Anyway, I started to get worried & read up on shooting without protection/hearing loss. It seems ever since then, I have heard (or have been imagining) a ringing in my ears, also known as Tinnitus. It’s driving me absolutely mad wondering if I have it or not. I’ve listened to sounds of Tinnitus & mine does not sound like that. I do have OCD which makes me wonder if my brain is making this ringing tone to sort of mess with me. If I don’t concentrate on it, I don’t hear it. Once I say to myself, "wait, where’s the ringing at?" I hear the VERY faint "eeeeeeeeeeee" almost like a nail scratching glass if that makes sense. I need to know if I have it or not, because the uncertainty is driving me mad. I can also hear it when I lay my head against a pillow. Also, opening my jaw wide & flexing it makes a loud ring. What’s up with me guys? From what I’ve read, people with Tinnitus KNOW it is Tinnitus, there doesn’t seem to be uncertainty, it’s always clear that they have it. Thank yous, and God Bless.

Hello everyone. My name is David & I am 20 years old. A week ago yesterday, me & a friend were shooting his new .380 hangun. I took 3 shots without ear protection, though it was outside (indoors reflect sound waves much more). After this, I had no ringing in my ears, but a ‘stuffy’ feeling. In the past six months, I’ve also shot a .40S&W handgun about 9 times with no ear protection, which left me no ringing, or ‘stuffy’ feeling.
Wednesday evening when I got home, I got to reading & it seemed like my hearing got worse with each article I read. I think it was Friday (after doing more reading) that I’d noticed a ringing or ‘whine’ in my ears. My fears turned towards Tinnitus. Ever since I’ve read the word "Tinnitus" the past few days have been torturous. Now, I’m curious as to if this really is Tinnitus, or ear sensitivity after shooting. The ‘whine’ is hard to explain. It isn’t a constant tone, it’s like.. The more I focus in & try to ‘hear it’ it may ‘radiate’ if that makes any sense what so ever. It’s as if when I ‘listen’ for it, it may make a 2 second burst of ‘whine’ and then subside, but the moment I turn attention towards it, BANG there it is. It’s almost so high in frequency that I can’t hear it, but I feel the sensitivity in my ears when it happens. If I clench my teeth VERY tight I can hear it also, but mostly when I open my jaw up very wide. Chewing food does not trigger it.
I’ve also noticed things like Lawnmowers make my ears sensitive since this occurance, along with car brakes & a buzzing light I heard in the hospital today (My mom has cancer, God knows the stress isn’t helping in my situation). I’m just finding it hard to believe a few gunshots could have cost me permanent Tinnitus (Although anythings possible, the more I’ve read it seems prolonged exposure to excessive decibel levels is the likely cause in that situation). I have an appointment with an ear doctor next week, to find out what’s going on & to have a check up, but I think I’m going to cancel & find a good audiologist or specialist to see to make sure my hearing, and overall hearing health are ok. All I am trying to do is gain some peace-of-mind & comfort in hopes of being able to relax. I’ve cut down on music almost completely, & have been trying to remain in silence (Maybe if I let my ears relax & take time to heal it will subside & go away).
God Bless anyone who reads & answers this question. I’m having a hard enough time dealing with stress & anxiety than having to worry about having Tinnitus for the rest of my life at age 20. Thank you. Today seems better than Yesterday. Thanks everyone.
Its 99% likely that the club i was in is what caused the ringing in my ear however the same night i got a piercing. Usually at concerts/clubs both ears will be ringing the next day however its been 3 days & only one ear persists on ringing (ie the pierced one) whilst the other is perfect………..so i’m just curious if the trauma from piercing can cause tinnitus at all
